Two Cooling Blankets: One Winner

I live in Arizona. Though I now live at a higher elevation in the mountains and no longer live in the desert, I used to pride myself in not being bothered by our 115+ degree days when I did. Then I had two kids, then I started taking a medication, and then I turned into a middle-aged woman, all within a couple of years. That medication causes me to sweat and be bothered by heat. Two pregnancies causes me to sweat and be bothered by heat. Reaching middle age causes me to sweat and be bothered by heat. Long story short, I’m rarely comfortable these days even in our mild [in comparison to the desert] mountain summers.

I’ve always been lucky enough to have the world’s most comfortable bed, the most comfortable bedding, and the ability to sleep through the night. When the sweat started, that all changed. When this became a problem, I went on a quest to find the best summer-time blanket that would allow me to get back to those ideal sleeping conditions again.

The first blanket I bought was a woven bamboo-rayon. What I like about it is that it’s still somewhat heavy, but yet doesn’t contribute to feeling any more stifled. The breathability is very evident and when the air kicks on, I feel it through the blanket comfortably, yet it keeps me cozy without feeling hot.

The second blanket is this newer nylon one that I happened to get [what I think is] a great deal on on Mother’s Day. If you happen to know what vintage nightgowns feel like, this is pretty much the same material on one side. The opposite side is more of a jersey/t-shirt feel. It has a nice weight to it without being too heavy. The jury is still out on which one will be cooler, but my hunch is that the bamboo would be, primarily because of the woven texture and less of a polyester-type feel.
